“You don’t even want to know,” Calvin was shaking his head. “It’s one of the worst things I’ve ever heard of.”

Archer was standing in the pediatric unit of the National Health Service York Hospital, the same hospital they had brought the injured little girl the night before from the crime scene. The six-year-old was in intensive care after having been operated on the previous night to close two stab wounds. After taking care of some business after dropping the children off at school, Archer had come by the hospital for a report but what he was hearing from Calvin wasn’t something he was ready to hear.

“Spill it,” he commanded softly, his jaw ticking.

“Forensics has it now,” Calvin replied. “God, Archer, I hate to even tell you this, but we found a note on the girl. A note to you.”

Archer had to make a conscious effort to keep from reacting, but the tick in his jaw grew worse. “Where did you find it? I didn’t see anything on the girl and I’m the one who held on to her until the medics arrived.”

Calvin sighed heavily, glancing over at the two uniformed bobbies who were guarding the little girl’s door. He pulled Archer with him so they could speak more privately and they ended up over by a window overlooking the parking lot. Calvin lowered his voice.

“This sick bastard, whoever he is, took one of the mother’s tampons, pulled out the tampon part, and reinserted it with a note,” he muttered. “He inserted the whole thing into the little girl’s anus. When the doctors pulled it out, they found the note addressed to you inside.”

Archer couldn’t help it; he closed his eyes tightly, briefly, as if to ward off such disgusting horror. “What did the note say?”

Calvin pulled a rumpled piece of paper out of his pocket and began to read.
